Frequently Asked Questions
What is Coaching?
Coaching is an equal partnership between two people. The purpose of coaching is two-fold: To deepen the client’s knowledge (insights/breakthroughs) and forward his/her action. By asking powerful questions, making requests, and holding accountability, the coach helps to accelerate the client towards his/her goal. The coach holds the client both capable and resourceful. Is this regard, the coach sees the client as the expert in his/her life.
Why would I want to hire a coach?
Often times, when it comes to our own lives, we lack clarity and perspective. Sometimes others can see things about us that we totally miss. We might feel “stuck” or unsure of our next step. A coach can offer insights, perspective, and support in helping you gain clarity and momentum to move you forward.
How does coaching work?
Most coaches ask for a three-month commitment from a client. What is known is that a client often goes through an initial euphoria when working with a coach. This may be followed by a breakdown, as the client begins to assimilate new knowledge, followed by a breakthrough. In fact, this may happen several times during this three-month period. The coach will ask the client to fill out an initial “Client Inventory” to gain a clearer understanding about the client and what she wants to gain from their coaching. This document will be reviewed at the three month interval to access client progress and if the coach meeting her expectations. At this juncture, a determination will be made as to whether the client wants to continue coaching.
How often do I see my coach? How long are the sessions? Is what I say held in confidence?
After the initial “Client Inventory,” which most often is conducted in person, most coaching calls occur over the phone. I generally coach my client’s weekly for thirty-minute sessions. What I have found is that a very deep level of listening and sharing can be experienced in coaching clients using the phone. In addition, it offers the client the convenience of not having to travel. I generally ask the client to email or fax me a weekly update prior to our coaching call. Besides allowing me to see the client’s progress, it makes the ensuing session more productive. Additionally, a weekly record allows clients to chart their progress and celebrate their wins! Everything that is said in a coaching call is held in strict confidence, including the names of my client’s. |
